Outside circumference

C_out = π × OD

Rolled sheet metal length needed for one turn

Inside circumference

C_in = π × ID

ID = OD − 2 × wall

Annulus area (metal)

A_annulus = π/4 × (OD² − ID²)

What goes into weight × length × density

Bore area (flow)

A_bore = π/4 × ID²

GPM ÷ velocity = area, in consistent units

Outside surface (run)

A_surface = C_out × L

Paint, jacketing, insulation coverage

Hydraulic radius

R_h = A_bore / P_wetted = ID / 4

Manning and Darcy-Weisbach both need R_h

Tip: wall thickness is where the weight lives

If you ever wonder why a Sch 80 pipe is so much heavier than Sch 40 at the same NPS, look at the annulus area. For a 6-inch pipe, Sch 40 wall = 0.280 in → annulus 6.27 in²; Sch 80 wall = 0.432 in → annulus 9.48 in². That is 51% more metal — and the weight calculator shows exactly that ratio. This surface area page gives you the geometry that makes the weight real.

Geometry feeds every other tool

The annulus area on this page is the number the home pipe weight calculator multiplies by wall length and density to give you lb/ft. The bore area is the denominator in GPM ÷ velocity, which is how the pipe size calculator works. The wetted perimeter and hydraulic radius drop straight into the Darcy-Weisbach pressure drop calculator and the Manning gravity flow calculator.

Before you paint, insulate, size, weigh or hydro-test a run — run its geometry through this page once. Every number downstream becomes a single-step lookup instead of a fresh derivation. All calculators on this site read the same NPS and Schedule data from one source — the geometry you pick here is the geometry every tool downstream uses.

Surface area FAQ

How do you calculate the cross-sectional area of a pipe?▼

Cross-sectional area comes in two useful forms. Annular (solid ring) area — the metal — is π/4 × (OD² − ID²) — input to the weight calculator. Bore area — what fluid flows through — is π/4 × ID². This calculator shows both at once when you enter the outside diameter and wall thickness (or pick an NPS preset). A 6-inch Sch 40 pipe has a 6.065-inch ID so its bore is 28.94 in² and its annulus (from 6.625 OD) is 6.27 in².

What is the formula for outside surface area of pipe?▼

Outside surface area = π × OD × L. Use OD in feet to get ft² for paint or jacketing. A 100 ft run of 6-inch pipe: π × (6.625/12) × 100 = 173.4 ft² — about half a gallon of paint at 350 ft²/gal. If you add wall thickness t of insulation, the jacketed surface area becomes π × (OD + 2t) × L — the formula you want for estimating insulation jacket material.

What is wetted perimeter and hydraulic radius?▼

Wetted perimeter (P_w) is the pipe wall that touches the fluid — for a full pipe P_w = π × ID, for a partially-full gravity line you need the Manning geometry. Hydraulic radius R_h = A / P_w — where A is the cross-sectional flow area. For a full pipe R_h = ID / 4. Both R_h and P_w sit at the heart of Manning's equation for gravity flow and Darcy-Weisbach pressure drop, which is why you need them once the pipe leaves the drawing board and hits the hydraulic model.

Why does pipe circumference scale linearly with OD?▼

C = π × D — it is the definition of π. A 2-inch pipe is exactly twice the circumference of a 1-inch pipe, so it takes exactly twice as much sealant, twice as much insulation jacket, and twice as long a strip of sheet metal to roll. The sheet-metal roll-up width IS the circumference — that is the sheet-metal worker's shortcut.

How are inside and outside surface area different?▼

Outside area is π × OD × L. Inside area is π × ID × L. The difference is only the wall thickness: inside is always smaller. For a thin-walled pipe (low Schedule, large NPS) the gap is tiny — a 12-inch Sch 40 pipe has 39.7 ft² of outside and 38.8 ft² of inside per 100 ft, less than 3% difference. For thin-wall jacketing or large-paint estimates, they are effectively the same; for hydro testing (where the inside walls need corrosion protection) the inside figure is the one that matters.

What is hoop stress and how does it relate to surface area?▼

Hoop stress σ = P × D / (2 × t) — it is tangential stress trying to split the pipe radially. It relates to surface area because the pressure P acts on the full inside area (π/4 × ID²), and that force is carried by the 2 × t × L wall cross-section. Bigger D raises hoop stress directly; bigger t drops it. The area of the wall ring you see at the end of a cut pipe is exactly 2 × t × something — and hoop stress is pressure divided by that ring's resistance.
