Pipe Bending Calculator
Bend allowance, setback, arc length, offset, cope height, fish-mouth miter angle — every number you need to build a bend or a miter from NPS, angle and material.
Bend allowance (neutral axis)
12.423 in
Outside arc length
13.057 in
Setback
14.146 in
Springback-compensated angle
91.5°
Bend 90° on finished pipe → program 91.5° on bender
Same bend, different material — the 90° compare
Same 2" pipe, 3D centerline radius — only material changes. Springback is the biggest surprise here: stainless has 1.7× the springback of steel, aluminum has half. The k factor moves the bend allowance.
| Material | k-factor | Springback (°) | BA, 90° (in) | Bend risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel (k ≈ 0.33) | 0.33 | 1.5° | 12.423 | MEDIUM |
| Aluminum (k ≈ 0.42) | 0.33 | 0.8° | 12.759 | LOW |
| Copper (k ≈ 0.40) | 0.33 | 1.0° | 12.684 | LOW |
| Stainless steel (k ≈ 0.25) | 0.25 | 2.5° | 12.125 | HIGH |
| HDPE (k ≈ 0.50) | 0.33 | 0.3° | 13.057 | LOW |
Bend risk is an engineering heuristic, not a safety rating — stainless has lower formability at small radii than steel, which we flag as "HIGH".
More from the same pipe — offset, cope and fish-mouth
OFFSET · 22.5° pair
Intermediate pipe length = offset ÷ 2 × 2.414
For a 6-inch offset with two 22.5° bends: intermediate run = 6 × 2.414 = 14.48 in.
General: L = offset ÷ sin(angle/2)
PIPE COP · 45° + 90° branch
Cope height = OD × tan(θ/2)
For this pipe (OD 2.375 in): 45° cope height = 0.984 in, 90° cope = 2.375 in.
Miter saw angle per branch: θ/2
FISH-MOUTH · segmented 90°
8-segment 90° bend
Miter angle per segment = 22.5°. Inside and outside arc already shown in the workbench.
For 45° bend, double segment count or halve the miter per ring
Tip: strip width is the circumference
Rolling sheet metal into pipe? The strip width for this pipe is 7.461 in — that is π × OD. For a 10 ft piece you need a strip of 7.461 × 120 = 895.4 in² of sheet.
Bends are geometry — every number comes from OD and angle
The outside arc length you just read is the same circumference the surface area calculator gives you — it is π × OD, wrapped around a radius and sliced by the angle. When you add the bent pipe to a straight run on a takeoff sheet, pair this page with the home weight calculator to get the lb/ft of the bent piece, and the dimension calculator if your drawing uses DN instead of NPS.
Pipe bending FAQ
What is the setback / bend radius / bend allowance triangle?▼
The three numbers you reach for when bending: Bend allowance (BA) is the material the bend will consume along the neutral axis — BA = π / 180 × angle × (R + k × OD) × 180 / π × 1 — but the quick version in inches is (angle ÷ 360) × 2π × (R + k × OD). Setback is how far back you place the bend mark from the target line so the finished pipe lands at the correct end dimension. Outside arc is the total material path along the outside of the bend. This calculator shows all three for every angle.
What is offset calculation — the 22.5° trick?▼
Pipe fitters use 22.5° bends for small offsets because the math is clean: run length between two 22.5° bends equals the offset distance × 2.414. For 45° it is offset × 1.414. General: L = offset ÷ sin(angle/2). If you know offset and angle this calculator gives you the intermediate pipe length instantly — no trigonometry in the field.
What is segmented pipe bending (fish-mouth / cope cut)?▼
When you need a tight elbow radius on site without a pipe bender, you cut a straight pipe into ring segments at angles A = 360° / N (where N is the number of segments) and miter each ring at half that angle so when you rotate them they form the bend. The cut angle per ring is A/2 and the centerline radius R = pipe_OD × 1.5 for standard long radius. This tool shows both the miter angle and the segment count.
What is pipe cop / pipe notch / fish mouth calculation?▼
All three words for the same thing: the mitered end cut on a pipe that branches into another pipe. The cope height h = pipe_OD × tan(θ/2), where θ is the branch angle. The distance from the pipe end to the start of the cope on the branch pipe is h / tan(θ/2). This calculator gives the cope height at 45° and 90° — the two angles you see 90% of the time in handrails and framed steel.
What is strip width calculation for pipe rolling?▼
Strip width = circumference = π × OD (all in the same unit). If you are shearing sheet metal and rolling it into pipe, the finished pipe inside diameter is OD − 2 × wall — so strip width for the ID you want is π × (ID + 2 × wall). This calculator's circumference number IS the strip width for a one-piece roll, and that is why strip-width questions show up on pipe calculators.
What is springback and why does it matter?▼
When you bend metal, it springs back a few degrees after the ram releases — steel ≈ 1.5°, aluminum ≈ 0.8°, stainless ≈ 2.5°. To hit a finished 90° you bend 91.5° on steel. This tool shows the adjusted angle you should program the bender for, not just the finished angle you need. Skip it and your handrail ends up off by a degree or two — enough to be visible.
