Pipe Fitting Weight Calculator
Build a BOM of butt-weld elbows, tees, reducers, caps and flanges — get piece weight in lb and kg, internal bore volume for hydro testing, and the combined total with the straight pipe run. Fits follow ASME B16.9/B16.5 geometry for estimating and planning.

Pair fittings with the home weight calculator
The home pipe weight calculator gives you straight pipe lb/ft from one shared NPS × Schedule dataset — use that weight for every piece count you already know, drop the fitting rows from this page into the same spreadsheet, and you have a total order weight that includes every elbow, tee and flange. If you need to verify the wall thickness on a drawing with an unusual schedule or need the real ID for the bore, the dimension calculator has the same OD table this tool reads.
When the job moves into pressure territory — ASME B31 piping, high-pressure flanges, hydro test pressures that exceed the line's MAWP — open the pressure drop calculator to pair the B16.5 flange pressure rating with the actual run conditions. All of these start from the same NPS numbers so the takeoff, the pressure rating and the fitting count never disagree about what "6-inch Sch 40" actually means.
Pitfalls that make takeoffs go wrong
Tip: always use the real ID
Every fitting formula inside this tool uses the real OD from NPS and the schedule wall. If you plug 2 instead of 2.375 the elbow loses 16% of its metal volume — the calculator already applies the OD for you, just pick the right NPS.
Warning: threaded ≠ butt-weld
Forged threaded fittings (B16.11) have thicker hubs and different geometry. A threaded 2-inch 90° can easily weigh 1.5× the butt-weld LR elbow this calculator shows — wrong dataset, wrong weight.
Don't: forget fitting takeouts on straight pipe
Each 90° elbow consumes about 1.5 × NPS of straight pipe takeout. A run with six 2-inch elbows saves 18 inches of pipe — forget that and you will order 1.5 feet more pipe than you need, quietly.
Pipe fitting FAQ
How do I estimate pipe fitting weight?▼
Estimators use ASME B16.9 / B16.5 formulas for butt-weld fittings. A 90° long-radius elbow approximates to ¼ of the full-circle bent pipe at R = 1.5 × OD. Tees use the header segment plus two stub ends; reducers use the frustum formula; flanges use the plate-plus-hub geometry. This calculator runs all of them — pick the fitting type, NPS and material and read both piece weight and internal volume for hydro testing.
What is the difference between 3R and 5R pipe bends?▼
Long-radius (LR = 1.5D) is the standard butt-weld elbow. A 3R bend has a centerline radius of 3 × NPS, a 5R bend has 5 × NPS. The longer radius reduces friction loss but costs more — you lose one elbow diameter for every extra 1.5 × NPS of radius. This calculator defaults to LR (1.5D); rerun with the straight pipe length adjustment if your spool uses 3R or 5R.
Does this tool replace my supplier's catalogue weights?▼
No — ASME B16.9 is the allowable range, and actual piece weights drift by ±5–10% depending on manufacturer practice. Use this calculator for takeoffs, rough freight and crane planning, then confirm the real weight from the supplier's datasheet before committing to a truckload or rigging plan.
How do I add fittings to a straight pipe takeoff?▼
Each 90° butt-weld elbow consumes about 1.5 × NPS of straight-pipe takeoff (the 'takeout'). Each 45° elbow consumes roughly 0.5 × NPS. A tee consumes the header straight length plus one branch length. This calculator shows the fitting piece weight separately so you can drop it straight into the BOM — you still decide the takeoff allowance on the straight pipe.
Does the calculator work for threaded or compression fittings?▼
No. Threaded fittings (ASME B16.11 / B1.20.1) are forged with different hub geometry and require a separate dataset. This tool is strictly for butt-weld fittings (B16.9) and flanges (B16.5). If you need threaded fitting weights, open a threaded catalogue — they are not geometrically similar enough to approximate from pipe annulus math.
What is the internal volume for — hydro testing?▼
Yes. Hydro crews pre-fill lines with water, which weighs 62.4 lb/ft³, and the fitting bore volume tells you how much water to budget for. A 6-inch Sch 40 90° elbow holds about 0.11 gallons — multiply by count and you know how much to bill the water truck. Steel plus water plus fittings is the total hanging load.
